Joel Klatt is fully on board with Caleb Williams as the likely No. 1 overall pick in this year’s draft.

The popular analyst for FOX dropped his first mock draft of the cycle on Wednesday coming out of the Super Bowl. As a part of Klatt’s reasoning for Williams at No. 1 overall, he pointed to the USC and former Oklahoma star’s pedigree as the closest thing to Patrick Mahomes to come through college football.

In fact, Klatt believes Williams — in some ways — is more polished than Mahomes coming out of college. That’s saying a lot considering Mahomes just captured his third Super Bowl title with the Kansas City Chiefs:

“The talent of Caleb Williams, that cannot be overlooked. We have seen for two years now this guy be the closest thing to Patrick Mahomes come through college football since Patrick Mahomes,” said Klatt. “And in so many ways, he’s even more polished and at least in college better than even Mahomes was when he was at Texas Tech.”

Klatt explained how Williams’ key attributes mirror some of Mahomes’ elite strengths, including Williams’ ability to create outside of the pocket and throw on the run. To no surprise, Williams continues to lead the odds to become the No. 1 pick at ESPN Bet, and fans can utilize SDS’s preferred sports betting apps to track and take advantage of the latest odds.

Part of the discussion for the Chicago Bears involves Justin Fields and where he stands in regard to his rookie contract. According to Klatt, Fields needing a new deal soon is part of the reason the Bears are better off restarting the rookie clock with Williams.

“Why not start the rookie contract clock over? I think that’s more beneficial than anything so you have to include that as part of the evaluation between a guy like Caleb Williams and Justin Fields,” Klatt admitted. “So mainly because of that is why I think Chicago should move forward.”
