Paul Finebaum isn’t buying Lane Kiffn’s story on when the Ole Miss head coach decided to stay in Oxford.

Heading into the Egg Bowl, it was widely reported that Kiffin was Auburn’s top target and Kiffin could be leaving for The Plains after the conclusion of the Rebels’ 2022 regular season.

Saturday morning, it became clear that Kiffin was staying at Ole Miss. ESPN’s Chris Low tweeted the following statement from Kiffin:

“I had a meeting with the team and the staff and told them I was staying and it would be announced after the game. I didn’t want it to be about me staying before the game, but about the team.”

Finebaum says Kiffin’s version of events doesn’t add up.

“Of all the statements made publicly, the most ridiculous is what Lane Kiffin said (Saturday),” Finebaum told ESPN’s Matt Barrie. “I’ll try to say this without breaking down into hysteria, he did not announce that he was staying at Ole Miss before the game because he thought it might adversely affect his team.

“I don’t understand what that means. It seems like if you’re about to play the biggest game of the year, and you say, ‘Guys, I’ve been offered a job, but I’m staying here, bam!'”

Barrie implied the locker room would be going wild.

“I mean, that’s total BS,” Finebaum continued on Kiffin. “I mean, only Lane Kiffin could not only say that, but until this conversation, get away with it, because I know people will go like, ‘Oh yeah, well you’re right, Lane.'”

Finebaum and Barrie continued to discuss Kiffin staying at Ole Miss and receiving an extension with a raise.

Kiffin has appeared on Finebaum’s show many times over the years. We’ll see how he responds to Finebaum.
