It’s been a rough season at Tennessee, and an uneven start for South Carolina, but both programs had their best weekend of the season. ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit noticed.

Herbstreit listed South Carolina at the top of his “top performing teams” of Week 7 list, followed by LSU, which knocked off Florida in a marquee primetime matchup at Tiger Stadium. Tennessee, following its win over Mississippi State, rounded out the top 5 after Oklahoma and Wisconsin.

The Vols dispatched of the Bulldogs and in the process ended a 6-game losing streak against FBS teams. The Tennessee defense also bottled up SEC leading rusher Kylin Hill, who had just 11 carries for 13 yards. Hill entered the game averaging 119 yards per game.

Former starter Jarrett Guarantano took over when Brian Maurer suffered a concussion and went 6-for-7 for 106 yards.

The South Carolina win was marked by 3 interceptions from CB Israel Mukuamu, who returned one for a touchdown as the Gamecocks won in double over time, 20-17, despite being 24.5-point underdogs.

LSU’s win over Florida came when QB Joe Burrow had as many touchdown passes as incompletions — 3. The Tigers recovered from an earlier deficit to run off 3 unanswered touchdowns to topple the Gators 42-28.
