As the season began, there were impact players we knew — established stars such as Derrick Henry, Leonard Fournette and Laquon Treadwell.

But what about players that we didn’t expect to have a breakout season?

Let’s take a look at the 5 SEC standouts who emerged in 2015.

1. Arkansas QB Brandon Allen — The Razorbacks senior has thrown for 22 touchdowns and just six interceptions. In 2014, Allen finished the season with 20 touchdowns and five picks, so we knew there was potential. New offensive coordinator Dan Enos and a trip to the Manning Passing Academy as well as a better supporting cast are likely factors in his improvement.

2. Missouri DL Charles Harris —  When you think of the Tigers defense, usually Kentrell Brothers comes to mind. But Harris has proven himself as a dominant force against the run this season and also ranks No. 5 in the SEC in sacks with 7 on the year. The sophomore is the latest in a run of great defensive linemen at Missouri.

3. Auburn RB Peyton Barber — The latest great Auburn running back has had a breakout season after getting little playing time last season. Though Barber isn’t an exception, he’s still had unexpected results. Last year, he had 10 carries for 54 yards. This year, he has 206 carries for 900 yards and 12 TDs.

4. Texas A&M WR Christian Kirk — Though Kirk was a top recruit, it was hard to predict the immediate impact he’s had as a freshman. But he has proven he can play. Kirk ranks No. 2 in the SEC in receiving behind only Laquon Treadwell. He has 63 catches for 828 yards and six TDs.

5. LSU DE Lewis Neal — This is the junior’s first season as a starter for LSU. Entering the season, he had just 10 career tackles and half a sack. Now, he has cemented himself as one of the top defensive ends in the SEC with 40 tackles and seven sacks.
