Don’t fool yourself. Texas A&M isn’t going to be any sort of factor in the West after surviving Arkansas in overtime at the Southwest Classic.

The opposite wouldn’t have been true, either. Even if the Razorbacks had found a way to slide past the Aggies in the extra frame, coach Bret Bielema and Co. looked nothing like contenders Saturday in college football’s most competitive division.

In the end, A&M safety Armani Watts intercepted Hogs quarterback Austin Allen in the end zone to seal what was a ridiculous 50-43 victory. While the Ags are now one of the most unimpressive 3-1 teams in the country, Arkansas falls to 1-2 and is in big trouble. To be fair, both programs appear to be competely lost at times on both sides of the ball.

We haven’t even flipped the calendar to October yet, but Texas A&M did little more than stay one step ahead of the Razorbacks for the West cellar.

Aggies coach Kevin Sumlin still hasn’t lost to the Hogs in six tries, while Bielema slips to an embarrassing 0-5 against A&M. Despite a total of 93 points being put on the scoreboard by both clubs, neither performance was especially awe-inspiring.

For the Ags, receiver Christian Kirk justified his All-American status. He caught 5 passes for 110 yards and 2 touchdowns, including the game-winner in OT, in addition to a 100-yard kickoff return for another spectacular score. Of course, Arkansas was foolish enough to kick to him in the fourth quarter after having just reclaimed the lead.

It was one of several coaching blunders, plus the usually disciplined Razorbacks continually shot themselves in the foot with 9 penalties.

Allen was a frustrating 12-of-25 for 229 yards with 2 touchdowns and the soul-crushing INT in the extra frame.

Texas A&M QB Kellen Mond, still covered in warts as a true freshman, deserves a tip of the cap. The decisive throw he made to Kirk for the TD was his best of the day, perfectly timed off play-action and right on the money against tight coverage.

However, Sumlin had zero confidence in his young signal caller to win the game in regulation. He took the ball out of Mond’s hands — unless he decided to keep it on the read-option — before poor clock management wasted a potential shot or two. The Aggies took no chances and kicked the tying field goal with 8 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

As for the Hogs, Allen was a frustrating 12-of-25 for 229 yards with 2 touchdowns and the soul-crushing INT in the bonus frame.

Even beyond the mediocre numbers, Allen couldn’t get anything going through the air until the waning moments of the contest. His wideouts are young and inexperienced. His tight ends don’t catch the ball consistently. His blocking remains poor.

Keep in mind that Allen (above) led the conference with 3,430 yards passing in 2016 as a junior and first-year starter. With so much pedigree and success under his belt, it was reasonable to expect a monster senior campaign from him in Fayetteville. Instead, he hasn’t been able to elevate what seems like an inferior supporting cast.

And it’s not like the ground assault wasn’t effective. Arkansas ran the ball 45 times for 226 yards and 3 TDs on the afternoon.

If there's a such thing as a bad game with 93 points scored and 958 yards of total offense accumulated, this was it. Neither club should be holding its head up high after that one.

Defensively, neither team was capable of getting a stop consistently. While it may have been fun to see all those splash plays and lead changes down the stretch, both defensive coordinators had to have been tearing their hair out upstairs.

Where A&M goes from here is anyone’s guess. The Ags blew the biggest lead in school history in the opener at UCLA. They survived a taffy pull with Nicholls State at home. They eventually pulled away from Louisiana after going to the Kyle Field locker room trailing. For prolonged periods of time in all four games, they’ve been awful.

Just peek at their upcoming schedule, too. South Carolina, Alabama and Florida prior to their bye, and then Mississippi State and Auburn after it.

Even if four of those five matchups are in College Station — they’ll face the Gators on the road — they’re likely to be the underdog in at least four of them. Additionally, Texas A&M has gotten worse as the season goes on the last few years, not better.

Sumlin is sitting on the hottest seat in the league among head coaches, and while this W may cool it down a degree or two, he’s still in danger of burning a hole in his khakis. Mond wasn’t supposed to be playing this much right out of high school. The running game comes and goes. Getting the ball to Kirk can be difficult. The D is spotty at best.

So where exactly does that leave the Razorbacks? If Bielema weren’t so jolly and fun, he’d be getting a lot more hot-seat talk.

The Hogs led this game 28-27, 36-33 and 43-40 in the fourth quarter but surrendered the lead every single time. And then in overtime, it was the true freshman Mond making the crucial play, while the redshirt senior Allen made the critical error.

Still making a transition from the 4-3 to the 3-4 on defense, Arkansas gave up 216 yards passing and 285 yards rushing to a divisional foe that’s far from an offensive juggernaut. Mond is still learning and surrounded by a bevy of green teammates. Kirk is the only true difference maker for the Aggies, yet the Razorbacks couldn’t contain him.

If there’s a such thing as a bad game with 93 points scored and 958 yards of total offense accumulated, this was it. Neither club should be holding its head up high after that one.
