We all know about Nick Saban’s perfect record against his former assistants. That record may be put to the test in next year’s Iron Bowl. AL.com is reporting that Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian is expected to interview for the Auburn head coaching job after the SEC Championship Game.

Sarkisian was Alabama’s acting head coach in this year’s Iron Bowl with Saban in COVID-19 quarantine. UA’s win was credited to Saban and did not go on Sarkisian’s record.

Sarkisian has a 46-35 record from his time in the Pac-12. He went 34-29 in five seasons as the head coach of the Washington Huskies from 2009-13. He left Washington ahead of the Huskies’ bowl game to take the USC job. The Trojans went 9-4 in Year 1 under Sarkisian, winning the Holiday Bowl. Sarkisian only coached five games of his second season before his leave of absence and termination due to alcoholism.

After USC, Sarkisian joined the Alabama staff as an analyst in September 2016. He stepped into the offensive coordinator role for the College Football Playoff championship game after Lane Kiffin’s departure to take the FAU head coaching job.

Following the CFP loss to Clemson, Sarkisian left Alabama to be the Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator, a position he held through 2018.

Sarkisian returned to Alabama for his second stint in January 2019. This season, the Crimson Tide offense is averaging 49.5 points per game, No. 3 nationally in scoring offense.

Kevin Steele is currently the interim head coach at Auburn and remains a candidate for the full-time head coaching job.
