Baker Mayfield has been named the Tampa Bay Buccaneers starting quarterback.

Head coach Todd Bowles made that announcement on Tuesday morning. Mayfield, a former No. 1 overall pick, beat out 3rd-year player Kyle Trask for the starting job.

Mayfield has had a bumpy ride since enjoying some early success in Cleveland. He spent last season with the Carolina Panthers and the Los Angeles Rams.

His stint with the Rams did come with some success. He completed 63.6% of his passes for 850 yards, 4 touchdowns and 2 interceptions last season in relief of the injured Matthew Stafford. He also led the Rams to an impressive 17-16 win over the Raiders last December in his first game with the team.

He signed with Tampa Bay this offseason and will now lead the Bucs’ offense in 2023.

This will be Mayfield’s 6th NFL season out of Oklahoma. After winning the 2017 Heisman Trophy, Mayfield was the No. 1 overall pick by the Browns in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Trask was a 2nd round pick by the Bucs in the 2021 NFL Draft. After not playing in his rookie year, Trask completed 3-of-9 passes for 23 yards last season.

The Bucs will open the 2023 regular season against the Minnesota Vikings on Sept. 10.
