It won’t be long until the first SEC football Saturday is upon us, but until then, expect plenty of speculation and rankings surrounding the top players and coaches entering the season.

CBS Sports recently ranked the top 25 college football coaches for 2016, and five SEC coaches checked in on the rankings. The website obtained the rankings with “six voters turning in separate ballots of all 65 coaches.”

Nick Saban topped the list at No. 1, while Les Miles was the only other coach ranked in the top 10 at No. 7. Is Gus Malzhan really the SEC’s third best coach? Auburn’s head man was ranked No. 13. Hugh Freeze (No. 21) and Bret Bielema (No. 22) rounded out the SEC’s head coaches.

What’s the first thing you notice? All five coaches hail from SEC West programs, and no Eastern Division coaches were even included. Former UGA coach — now at Miami — Mark Richt checked in at No. 18. One coach who could jump into this discussion this year would be Butch Jones. Tennessee enters the season as probably the favorite to win the East.
