The SEC made history last season, earning two bids into the College Football Playoff.

This fall, sports personality Clay Travis predicts the conference will do it again. Only this time, both teams will also be from the same division: Alabama and Auburn.

As always, Alabama and Auburn will face each other during the last weekend of the regular season. Some would argue that because of that fact, the Iron Bowl is somewhat of an elimination game.

Of course, that’s not at all how it worked out last season.

Auburn won the Iron Bowl and won the SEC West, but then lost in the SEC title game the following week to Georgia. The loss in the Iron Bowl moved Alabama down in the rankings, but the Crimson Tide still cracked the Top 4 in the final verdict, and Georgia finished at No. 2.

That sets a precedent for two teams from the same division, even if they play each other after Thanksgiving, to make the College Football Playoff. If Auburn had won the SEC Championship instead of Georgia, Alabama still likely makes the playoff last season.

In fact, a Auburn victory in the SEC Championship last year would have only strengthened Alabama’s argument to make the playoff. Travis apparently sees this season breaking the same way only with the teams in opposite positions.

Since the creation of the College Football Playoffs in 2014, Alabama has played in them every year. They won the National Championship in 2015 and 2017.

Auburn has yet to earn a bid in college football’s relatively new final four. Auburn lost to Florida State in the final BCS National Championship.
