Last week, it was reported that Mark Emmert, president of the NCAA, told congressional leaders on a conference call that with so much uncertainty, the college football season could be shortened and end earlier than scheduled. The possibility of conference championship games on Thanksgiving weekend was even mentioned as a possibility.

Even if conference championship games get moved up, the College Football Playoff isn’t planning for any changes. CFP executive director Bill Hancock commented on the report Monday when he joined Lee Shirvanian and Mark Heim on “The Opening Kickoff” on WNSP-FM 105.5.

“We are still planning to play the semifinals Jan. 1 and the championship game Jan. 11,” Hancock said per Heim. “(NCAA president) Dr. (Mark) Emmert and the NCAA have many decisions to make just like everyone in college athletics.

“One thing the NCAA has to decide is what to do with the fall championships. The NCAA has shown a lot of flexibility to help everyone get through this, and I think they’ll continue to do that, but we’re still planning to play Jan. 1 and Jan. 11.”

According to Hancock, both CFP governing boards would have to make the decision to change the dates of the playoff games. There are two boards of 11 people. One board featuring a university president from each of the 10 conferences (Power 5, Group of 5) plus Notre Dame’s president. The other board is made up of the 10 conference commissioners plus Notre Dame’s athletic director.
