Greg McElroy is certainly ready for the Third Saturday in October, formally known as Alabama vs. Tennessee week. The ESPN analyst and podcast host has had a successful stint in broadcasting following his college and professional playing days.

On Saturday morning, McElroy hopped on Twitter and told a story about the 2008 Alabama vs. Tennessee game. Alabama ended up beating Tennessee 29-9 in Knoxville.

McElroy told a story of how Alabama’s team was preparing to celebrate the victory before the game was over. Obviously, Nick Saban would have jumped all over his players for trying to figure out a way to light the victory cigars before the game was even over. That ended up allowing McElroy to make a bit of college football history.

“I’m not going to lie, I have completely forgotten about this moment in my college career,” McElroy said on Twitter. “It’s been 15 years, so I feel like the statute of limitations is officially over. I don’t think Coach Saban is going to be upset with me not focussing on the play.

“We’re playing in Knoxville in 2008. We had 100-plus cigars sitting in the locker room and very excited about the postgame festivities. Then, it hit us — we don’t have lighters. How are we going to smoke our cigars without lighters?

“Then, we started asking people in the stands, ‘Hey, do you guys have any lighters? Toss down your lighters.’ People were already smoking their cigar and whatnot. They tossed down five or six plastic BIC lighters.

“So, I stuffed them in my pants and said, ‘Yes, we’re all covered.’ Then, the next thing you know, coach said, ‘McElroy you’re up. Let’s go.’

He thought to himself, “I have lighters in my pants, and you want me to go in the game?”

“So, I went in there and I can probably say I’m the only SEC football player or college football player for that matter in the last 60 years or so to play with lighters in his pants. Not my proudest moment, but looking back on it — pretty good.”

Will Alabama or Tennessee light the victory cigars Saturday evening? It’s setting up to be the game of the year in the SEC.
