SEC Network analyst Greg McElroy hasn’t seen hype like Tua Tagovailoa is getting since Jeremy Johnson in 2014.

Johnson entered SEC Media Days as a Heisman Trophy frontrunner in 2015 and the one who everyone thought was the second coming of Cam Newton. Until he wasn’t. Johnson’s struggles during the 2015 season are very well documented. He threw for just 1,053 yards, 10 TDs and seven INTs, and he was benched in favor of backup Sean White.

McElroy’s comparison of Tagovailoa and Johnson isn’t too far fetched. Both had played basically a game of football the year before, except there is a major difference in McElroy’s eyes: the opponent.

“Jeremy Johnson was a Heisman favorite off a half of football, too,” McElroy said, via The Montgomery Advertiser. “The difference between Jeremy Johnson and Tua Tagovailoa is Jeremy Johnson did it against Arkansas, which was one of the worst defenses we’ve ever seen a handful of years ago.

“He was awesome,” McElroy said about Johnson. “We were like, this guy is going to be unbelievable. Tua did it against one of the best defenses in college football with everything on the line. I would say that it’s different in that regard.”

Tagovailoa is now the betting favorite for the Heisman Trophy, and he hasn’t even started a game yet.

Tagovailoa and Jalen Hurts will continue to battle for the position during fall camp.
