The 16 programs that make up the SEC learned their 2024 season opponents on Wednesday. As expected, plenty of discussion centered around the teams with the toughest and easiest schedules.

ESPN’s Greg McElroy joined the SEC Network’s reveal broadcast on Wednesday to share his takes. When Dari Nowkah asked McElroy for which team has the toughest group to play, McElroy pointed to the back-to-back national champions.

“I think Georgia’s schedule is absolutely brutal,” McElroy said. “You get 5 games away from home… Their games played outside of Athens, (the teams) in 2022 went a combined 40-25. That includes an 11-2 Alabama, 8-5 Texas, 8-5 Ole Miss, 7-6 Kentucky and then Florida being the 1 team they play away from Athens that went under. 500.

“And we all know what that rivalry is like and what might be here 2 years from now as Billy Napier continues to hopefully get the Florida Gators back on track. I think this schedule is brutal given what should be a relatively manageable 2023 for the Dawgs.”

For the flip question, Nowkah went with McElroy’s choice of “manageable” instead of easiest or least difficult. McElroy said he does not see an “easy” schedule on the list, praising the conference for 2024 balance.

“I think LSU, however, has a fairly manageable schedule,” McElroy said. “You get Alabama at home, that’s a tricky one. But we’ll use the same metric that we just graded Georgia on. Their home schedule, the opponents in 2022 combined to go just 30-21. That includes Alabama, who was 9-games over .500 by themselves. You combine Oklahoma, Ole Miss and Vanderbilt, those 3 teams went .500 overall.

“Then you think about the road trips. Just a game over. 500, just 26-25 (in 2022) for those teams that they’ll be traveling to in 2024.”

Do you agree with McElroy’s takes on the most brutal and most manageable schedules?
