Kirk Herbstreit proudly takes the stance that college football players should compete for their program as long as they’re in school. And in the age of opt outs, and other decisions that are geared toward the individual, Herbstreit offered his latest thoughts on the so-called meaningless bowl games.

“You go and you compete your ass off,” Herbstreit said on a media Zoom call with reporters on Monday. “That’s what you do. You got to shake it off and move on to the next game and get the bad taste out of your mouth.”

As the College Football Playoff has become a more prominent dynamic to the bowl season, players with aspirations to play in the NFL have decided to opt out of games that are outside of the Playoff, or the New Year’s Six.
