Louisville has had a nightmarish start to the 2018 season.

After getting thrashed by No. 1 Alabama in Week 1, the Cardinals have lost three of their last five games, all of those losses being to conference teams.

Louisville’s 66-31 loss to Georgia Tech in Week 6 was the last straw for many fans, and some were hoping that coach Bobby Petrino could possibly be bought out. A board member of the University of Louisville Athletic Association says that fans shouldn’t hold their breath however.

According to the Courier Journal, Tom Meeker says that Louisville is not in a position to buy Petrino out.

Money is apparently tight, and donations are down. A $14 million buyout would be pretty tough to swing right now.

“I think the football program is in good hands, albeit the fact that we’re not winning (this season),” Meeker said. “… I don’t think it’s time to stand in the doorway, jump out of the plane and pull the D ring.”

“Fans are part of the campus community, they have to be heard. (But) I’m not on the board to make easy decisions.”

It’s interesting, because if cash is tight right now, imagine what kind of situation the program could be in if Louisville continues to tank under Petrino this season. Ticket sales would be down and program donations would certainly be down if this team continues to disappoint.

It’s a tough situation, and we’ll see how Louisville decides to proceed.
