There are few things more debated in college football than preseason and postseason polls. There is perception and reality for some teams that have a national reputation of flaming out at the end of the season, or seemingly never delivering in the so-called big games.

But the website Stassen.com offers a black and white explanation for who falls where when it comes to the start and end of the season. Perhaps there is too much chatter in the so-called “talking season,” for some teams or, conversely, a slew of 3-star recruits who play out of their shoes.

No matter, here is a definitive look at the preseason consensus compared to the final AP standing for each team.

Among SEC teams, Georgia appeared three times in the past five seasons among the top 10 most overrated teams, most of any SEC program. Yet four SEC teams — Tennessee, Ole Miss, Georgia and LSU — were all among the 10 most overrated teams last season.

But in 2015, the Bulldogs’ drop in the polls by 15 spots was topped by Auburn, which fell 19 spots from its consensus preseason standing, to the final AP ranking. In 2014, Auburn also had a noticeable drop, 17 spots, but was second to South Carolina, which fell 18.

In a season fraught with frustration for the true blue bloods of the sport, Georgia fell 22 spots during 2013. That was the worst of any program in America, but Texas and Florida each had double digit drops, followed by Texas A&M, Ohio State and Michigan.

The SEC had far fewer underrated teams in the past five seasons, seven versus 17 of the overrated teams.

Florida and Missouri each had two appearances among the top 10 underrated teams from 2012-2016. Missouri not only surprised pollsters in 2013, but didn’t garner much more respect in 2014 in its return to Atlanta as it still gained 12 spots in the polls in 2014.

Here is a breakdown of the top 10 overrated and underrated teams in the past five seasons:
