The NCAA issued a clarification on Friday for how it will handle multi-time transfers in football for the 2024 season.

Multi-time transfers will now be immediately eligible at their next institution, the NCAA says. This comes after a court ruled earlier this month that the NCAA could not legally enforce its previous multi-time transfer rule, which (barring a waiver) required those student-athletes to sit out for one year before being eligible to play.

Because of that ruling, the NCAA said Friday that all student-athletes who transfer during the 2024-25 academic year will not be required to sit out.

Here’s an excerpt from the memo sent by the NCAA, which was obtained by Yahoo! on Friday:

Question No. 3: Does the preliminary injunction enjoin the NCAA from enforcing Bylaw 14.5.5.1, as it relates to an undergraduate fall-sport student-athlete who transfers midyear (spring 2024), seeking confirmation of the student-athlete’s participation opportunity for the fall 2024 season?

Answer: It is not certain at this time whether the preliminary injunction will remain in effect during the 2024-25 season; however, as long as the undergraduate student-athlete transfers to another Division I institution during the 2023-24 academic year, the student-athlete will not be subject to Bylaw 14.5.5.1 during the 2024-25 academic year. The student-athlete would still be subject to any academic eligibility standards required for competition that may be developed or modified for the 2024-25 academic year.

There will be no change for first-time transfers or graduate transfers, who were granted immediate eligibility under the NCAA’s previous rules as well.

This ruling could have a big impact on which players decide to enter the transfer portal this offseason. The transfer window will remain open until Jan. 2, 2024. There will be another transfer portal window that opens on April 15, 2024.
