We’ve played six weeks of college football, which means some teams are already halfway through their schedule. At this point, as the saying goes, you are what your record says you are. At least to a degree. Even with five or six games under everyone’s belt, we’ve got a much better idea where everyone stands than we did a few weeks ago, but at this point of the year we still have to adjust our expectations from time to time. Here’s a look at what teams, players and things are overrated and underrated around the SEC.

OVERRATED

MOMENTUM — Alabama was coming off one of the most complete games it had played the past two seasons in the blowout victory at Georgia, but its offense was off its rhythm to start the game against Arkansas and placekicker Adam Griffith reverted back to unreliable. The Razorbacks were also coming off one of their best offensive performances in the upset of Tennessee but couldn’t get anything going against Alabama. Not even the running game that saw both Alex Collins and Rawleigh Williams rush for 100 yards a week earlier gained any traction.

MISSOURI’S OFFENSIVE LINE — The Tigers were supposed to be solid up front led by potential All-American center Evan Boehm, but the Tigers haven’t done a great job protecting quarterbacks Maty Mauk and Drew Lock, and they’ve been entirely unsuccessful making life easy on the running backs who have been forced into action with Russell Hansbrough battling injuries. In past seasons, the Mizzou O-line has helped make the skill players look good, perhaps even better than they actually were, but that hasn’t been the case this season.

GEORGIA — Not to pile on the Bulldogs who have not only lost two games in a row, but also saw star running back Nick Chubb go down with a devastating knee injury, but it wasn’t supposed to be like this. Georgia fans had legitimate hopes they wouldn’t see the Bulldogs lose two games all season, and now they’ve already fallen behind in the SEC East race and still have games away from Athens against Florida and Georgia Tech.

UNDERRATED

FLORIDA’S RECENT RECRUITING — Anybody who thought it would take a long time for Jim McElwain to turn things around for the Gators underestimated the young talent in Gainesville brought in by both he and former coach Will Muschamp. Quarterback Will Grier is a redshirt freshman and at least three other freshmen are making big contributions on the offensive line. The leading rusher and receiver are both juniors. Hardly any of the major contributors are seniors, meaning as good as 2015 has been, 2016 might be even bigger.

BYE WEEKS — Alabama spent the past Saturday getting banged up and frustrated against a physical Arkansas team and had to quickly turn around and start preparing for a Texas A&M squad with the kind of offense that has been a thorn in the Crimson Tide’s side. The Aggies had the week off, allowing more time for Kevin Sumlin to add new wrinkles to the up-tempo spread Nick Saban already hates and letting A&M rest and get healthy for what figures to be a key game in the SEC West race.

ARKANSAS DEFENSE — Even in their losses, the Razorbacks have played well defensively, only giving up 16 points to Toledo and just 35 to a Texas Tech team that’s scored at least 52 in every other game. The first half against Alabama was one of the better defensive efforts you’ll see this season. If the offense could rise to a level even close to the defense, Arkansas might have something.
