Several incoming recruits will find themselves in the thick of position battles to win starting spots or considerable playing time in 2016. Here are some that will be fun to track over the offseason:

Arkansas: primary ballcarrier

Devwah Whaley (four-star) vs. Rawleigh Williams vs. Denzell Evans

Williams suffered a scary neck injury this past season against Auburn and even though the reports are positive, it’s uncertain if he’ll participate this spring or in the 2016 season. With Williams’ status unknown, Denzell Evans may finally get a chance to show what he can do this spring. Whaley will join the program in the summer and will come in with a lot of hype. There’s little doubt that Whaley will get carries this season, but can he take over the job as a true freshman?

Florida: primary ballcarrier

Mark Thompson (JUCO four-star, early enrollee) vs. Lamical Perine (three-star) vs. Jordan Scarlett vs. Jordan Cronkrite

Most observers thought Scarlett, a highly-touted four-star propsect in the class of 2015, would have made inroads to taking over this position last season. Instead he struggled with some off-the-field issues and he’ll have to win the trust of head coach Jim McElwain this spring. Thompson is a big powerful back at 6-2, 225 and McElwain will give him every chance to win the job during the spring. Scarlett probably has the most natural talent and if he decides to put it together on the field he could run away (get it?) with this competition.

Auburn: quarterback

John Franklin (JUCO three-star, early enrollee) vs. Sean White vs. Jeremy Johnson

I’ll be the first to say it — I don’t see anything special about White. He’s not big, he doesn’t have a particularly strong arm, he isn’t mobile and I don’t think he can handle an SEC pass rush. The more he played, the more he got exposed. Johnson wasn’t perfect either, but he’s a big, athletic player who was probably overhyped last year by people that used too small of a sample size (some people had Auburn as a title contender …). He struggled with turnovers but it wasn’t his fault Auburn couldn’t tackle Leonard Fournette, and he took the brunt of the punishment for that loss. Franklin, who was at Florida State until 2014, is the big unknown and we’ll see more of what he has to offer during the spring.

Georgia: quarterback

Jacob Eason (five star) vs. Brice Ramsey vs. Greyson Lambert

Despite his effectiveness as a punter, let’s assume Ramsey will get another look at quarterback in the spring. With a Nick Chubb and Sony Michel in the backfield, Georgia doesn’t need its quarterback to be a superstar, just efficient and careful with the football. However, the threat of beating the opponent with the pass game needs to be there, and that’s where Eason could step to the front. The feeling is Eason will have every chance to win the job, and if he plays well in the spring he will not look back.
