Another week in the SEC saw the continued shake-up of the SEC East as Tennessee downed Georgia in a game that won’t soon be forgotten in Knoxville or Athens. With Georgia’s loss, the division appears to be Florida’s to lose. But if Week 6 taught us anything, it’s that anything can happen. All told, the SEC East went 2-3 with its two wins being cannibalized division victories.

Here’s a glance at a few things we gleaned from the SEC East in Week 6:

Florida Gators

Week 6 Result: Defeated Missouri 21-3.

What we learned: Kelvin Taylor isn’t among the SEC’s leading rushers, but the Florida tailback is proving invaluable for the Gators. The freshman rushed for the third-most yards in a game (99) in his career against Missouri in Week 6 and scored twice, providing all the offense Jim McElwain’s team needed in the 21-3 victory. Taylor has 438 yards and with a strong push, could flirt with the 1,000. He’s a key cog in a Florida offense that doesn’t beat you with stats, but finds a way to beat you.

Georgia Bulldogs

Week 6 Result: Lost to Tennessee 38-31.

What we learned: All of a sudden, Georgia (4-2, 2-2) might be the most disappointing team in the SEC, courtesy of losses to Alabama and Tennessee. Mark Richt’s squad is not technically eliminated from SEC East contention and still play Florida and Missouri, but the Bulldogs are two games behind the Gators for the division lead. Georgia’s woes extend beyond the loss of standout running back Nick Chubb. The defense is struggling and has become vulnerable to the big play. In fact, Georgia seems to rely too much at times on the home run play on both sides. The Bulldogs offense, defense and special teams punched in long scores of 96, 70, 48 and 28 yards against the Volunteers in Week 6. Otherwise, Richt’s offense capitalized just once in the red zone and was dominated in time of possession by nearly 10 minutes. It’s soul searching time in Athens, with a pesky Missouri team coming to the hedges next week, followed by Florida in two weeks after a bye.

Kentucky Wildcats

Week 6 Result: Bye week.

What we learned: Kentucky (4-1, 2-1 SEC) had a bye week, but managed to rise to second place in the SEC East thanks to Tennessee’s upset win over No. 19 Georgia (4-2, 2-2). The Wildcats host Auburn in Week 7 on ESPN.

Missouri

Week 6 Result: Lost to Florida 21-3.

What we learned: Missouri didn’t put up many points against first-place Florida in Week 6, but the Tigers did see a bit of life from their dormant receiving corps under Drew Lock. Making his second-career start, the freshman quarterback threw for a career-high 151 yards. Talk about spreading it around, Lock’s 16 completions went to 11 receivers. Starting in place of the still-suspended Maty Mauk, Lock’s 39 pass attempts were about 10 more than the Tigers’ average this season.

South Carolina

Week 6 Result: Lost to LSU 45-24.

What we learned: It seems almost fate that South Carolina drew LSU a week after floods devastated the Palmetto State. LSU opened its facilities, checkbooks and hearts to the South Carolina people in a refreshing display of class. The stories of LSU’s philanthropy range from lending the Gamecocks their charter plane to the LSU band learning the South Carolina fight song. On the field, the Gamecocks still have the same plucky fight in them as their head coach Steve Spurrier, but it’s clear the talent level is sorely lacking. Expect the Gamecocks to keep fighting …especially if they can get some consistent play at quarterback — which they have not. But don’t expect many more victories. Perry Orth started over an injured Lorenzo Nunez and connected with Jerell Adams on a 36-yard touchdown pass and with Pharoh Cooper on a 43-yard strike to give the Head Ball Coach’s squad some confidence as they prep to play host to Vanderbilt in Week 7.

Tennessee Volunteers

Week 6 Result: Defeated Georgia 38-31.

What we learned: Tennessee is entertaining when the Volunteers play a complete game. Josh Dobbs earned the résumé-building win that he and maligned head coach Butch Jones desperately needed after a rough start to a once-promising season. The Volunteers get to enjoy this win for two weeks before traveling to Tuscaloosa. After facing Alabama, the schedule becomes very friendly with Kentucky, South Carolina, North Texas, Missouri and Vanderbilt to round out the year. It’s conceivable that Tennessee can finish 8-4 with two huge “what ifs” after late collapses against Oklahoma and Florida. It’s doubtful they win the SEC East, but if they play like they did against Georgia, then Tennessee can hang with anyone in the nation.

Vanderbilt Commodores

Week 6 Result: Bye Week.

What we learned: Vanderbilt returns to action next week against a reeling South Carolina team, followed by home matchups with Missouri and Houston. Vanderbilt does have the nation’s No. 25-ranked defense. If the Commodores can solve some of their red zone issues on offense, then Vandy could give the Gamecocks and Tigers a scare. Chances to earn wins plummet after that with contests lined up with Florida, Kentucky, Texas A&M and Tennessee.
