Steve Spurrier is usually good for a headline or two just about anytime a mic is put in his face. That was the case yesterday when he was asked if he’d consider being college football’s commissioner, and he responded with a subtle jab to Ole Miss.

That wasn’t his only opportunity to raise some hell with the media on a Wednesday afternoon, though. While at the Regions Tradition pro-am yesterday, Spurrier was asked who he roots for during the Iron Bowl each and every year.

Instead of picking a side — between Auburn coach Gus Malzahn and Alabama coach Nick Saban— or just dissing both altogether with a Spurrier-like pun, this was his response:

“I’m sorta neutral with those guys when they play each other,” he said. “[Malzahn] and I are good friends. We played some golf together at the SEC meetings years back.”

Spurrier shot down the theory that he and Saban had any issues with each other, saying that “we always got along well.” He was recently the guest speaker at a high school clinic hosted by Saban in Tuscaloosa, and was wowed by the Crimson Tide’s brand new facilities and massive number of championships.

“Yeah, it was the first time I’d been around their facility,” Spurrier said. “Saw all 16 of those national championships. It’s a tremendous history and tradition of Alabama football — best in the country.”
