Welcome to The Throwback, where we look at the events from the past weekend and analyze what happened in SEC football.

THE COUNTDOWN IS ON!

I’m just going to leave that right here because I can’t wait until Dec. 3. It’s gonna be student vs. teacher. True freshman QB vs. True freshman QB. Tide vs. Bulldogs. It’s the game we’ve waited all season for!

Remember the last time Alabama and Georgia met in the SEC Championship Game? Yeah, it was epic.

Sadly we have to wait 13 weeks and act like this season is going to be interesting. So let’s rank the top 5 SEC programs after week 1.

1. Bama: Messed around for 20 minutes and then put a beating on USC that made Lane Kiffin smile. Afterward Alabama hired USC’s other former coach because it’s worked pretty well so far.

2. Georgia: Rallied from a 24-14 deficit to beat North Carolina in one of the more entertaining games Saturday. Nick Chubb rushed for 222 yards to confirm to everyone that he’s back.

3. Texas A&M: The Aggies showed a lot of toughness (physical and mental) in holding off UCLA at Kyle Field. If the defense can keep up their play A&M might be the second-best team in the West since LSU doesn’t seem interested.

4. Tennessee (I guess): They won.

5) Florida (sort of): They won too.

THE KIDS ARE GONNA BE ALL RIGHT

The 2016 SEC quarterback recruiting class received a lot of hype and for good reason — quarterback play in the SEC has been lacking and some new blood was needed. During the summer Alabama raved about Jalen Hurts, Georgia raved about Jacob Eason and South Carolina raved about Brandon McIlwain.

And predictably the three coaches of said programs decided to start upperclassmen with far less talent.

Still Eason (8-of-12, 131 yards, 1 TD) and Hurts (118 yards passing, 32 rushing, 4 combined touchdowns) made their cases to start next week and if not next week sometime in the near future. Saban said he plans to continue to use the two-quarterback system, which has me scratching my head because I didn’t see a second quarterback on the team.

Mcilwain (5-for-11, 35 yards, 29 yards rushing, one lost fumble) might need a little more seasoning but he will eventually get his shot because South Carolina isn’t going anywhere this season and Perry Orth isn’t going to be much more than what he is.

RANDOM MUSINGS

(This is where I just say what’s on my mind.)

I’ve already hit on Alabama hiring former USC and Washington head coach Steve Sarkisian as an offensive analyst and in five months the Tide will also have the opportunity to hire Clay Helton.

Ralph Webb deserves better.

Leonard Fournette deserves better.

South Carolina looked pretty …Muschamp-ian (??) on offense but that Bryan Edwards kid is gonna be pretty good.

This whole “Josh Dobbs can’t throw downfield” narrative will probably have some legs until he completes passes downfield with some consistency. He was 1-of-8 on passes 15 yards or greater Thursday.

Georgia already looks like a different team — a better team. Even down by 10 they played with poise and confidence. The last couple of years they panicked in those situations.

September is usually when Kentucky fans begin thinking about basketball season.

Les Miles was so concerned with his players doing the Lambeau Leap he figured the best way to put a stop to it was to keep them out of the end zone.

If you’re an Ole Miss fan and you decided to go to sleep after the first half you woke up a lot happier than Ole Miss fans who stayed up.

It’s good to see Steve Spurrier back at Florida. He belongs there. It’s his home. And frankly the offense could use his help.

Trevor Knight might work out for Texas A&M. The Aggies program needed a quarterback who is more about the team than himself.

Auburn’s defense might be pretty good this season if they don’t get confused thinking about what the offense is trying to do.

Yes I know the Josh Boutte cheap shot was awful and a poor show of sportsmanship and completely out of line. But it made for a some terrific Vines and GIFs.

WHOSE SEAT IS HOTTER

This week’s edition of whose seat is hotter matches up LSU coach Les Miles with Kentucky coach Mark Stoops.

The case for Miles is that he’s won a lot of games at LSU (112-33) but he doesn’t always win the right games. And by right games I mean ALABAMA.

But truth is Miles won five of his first seven meetings against the Tide before things went south. Right now Miles is on a five-game losing streak to Alabama with at least one of those losses costing him a national championship.

Losing to Alabama isn’t enough to get a man fired, but now the Tigers are struggling against Arkansas (lost two in a row), Ole Miss (lost two of last three) and don’t get a Tigers fan started on what happened Saturday against Wisconsin.

The Les Miles offense used to be wacky, unpredictable and somewhat charming. Now it’s just boring and depressing, especially when the Tigers have the best running back in the game (debatable) and a plethora of NFL quality wide receivers and offensive linemen at their disposal.

I don’t know why good wide receivers bother going to LSU because Miles’ staff isn’t going to develop a quarterback to throw them the ball. Bottom line: Miles isn’t going to change his philosophy and eventually LSU fans will overthrow him because of it.

The case for Stoops is simpler — the man is making promises he can’t keep.

He promised to make Kentucky football relevant; it isn’t. He promised to get the program to a bowl game; he hasn’t thus far.

Now the season is young but blowing a 35-10 lead at home to Southern Miss isn’t going to win over the skeptics. Stoops doesn’t have Miles’ resume, heck he’s only won 12 more college football games than I have.

He’s known for his time as a defensive coordinator at Miami and Florida State among others, but his Kentucky teams constantly lose because the defense can’t hold leads.

Stoops has improved the talent at Kentucky and the Wildcats are certainly competitive … they don’t win a lot but beating them isn’t as easy as it used to be.

This week the Wildcats have a chance to break a 29-year slump against Florida. A win there could go a long way to help Stoops secure his job. A loss and it’s hard to see that program recovering from an 0-2 start.

Right now the hotter seat is Miles. Mainly because LSU fans HATE HIM right now and Marcus Spears wants him fired too. I hope they know what they’re doing because Tom Herman ain’t gonna be cheap.

FINAL THOUGHTS

This is a little short this week because it’s Week 1 and no matter how much you might hate Auburn’s silly QB conundrum or Miles’ horrible play calling or everything about the South Carolina-Vandy game, it’s still just one week.

Everything could change next week. Teams that are trending down will trend back up. Some coaches on the hot seat will cool off with wins and other will get hot with losses. Next week is a new week and a new chance to make an impression.

Week 1 is always a lot of fun and full of surprises … but it’s still only one week.
