UAB RB Greg Bryant has died after being shot on in Palm Beach, Fla. Saturday morning, CBS12’s Lynda Figueredo confirmed on Sunday.

Bryant, from nearby Delray Beach, and passenger Maurice Grover were found by West Palm Beach police at approximately 4:45 a.m. in the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 according to the Palm Beach Post. The paper noted that Bryant was living in a North Miami hotel preparing for his move to Birmingham.

A former five-star prospect, Bryant originally signed with Notre Dame. After being ruled academically ineligible, Bryant transferred to a Miami junior college. His decision to join UAB, which disbanded its program for the 2015 season and is bringing it back for 2016, surprised many college football followers.

In January he discussed why he chose UAB with BleacherReport.com:

“I’ve had a ton of people ask me why UAB,” Bryant said. “They really don’t know my background and what they’re doing for me. Once I went on a visit and met them in person, I knew I was safe. I knew I was in a safe environment. They’re basically giving me a second chance.”
