Week 1 of the 2016 college football season was, on the whole, unexpected. Upsets abounded, especially in the SEC, where Mississippi State, LSU and Kentucky all lost in shocking fashion and Tennessee needed overtime to avoid a similar fate.

But there were plenty of unexpected stars as well, from a freshman quarterback at Alabama to a Georgia running back making an outstanding return from injury.

Here are 10 unexpected standouts from the first weekend of college football action:

Nick Chubb, RB, Georgia

Look, we all expected Chubb to have a strong return to the field on Saturday afternoon against North Carolina, but no one could have predicted the performance he turned in for the Bulldogs.

He looked like he’d never been injured, carrying the ball 32 times for 222 yards and two touchdowns, finishing with a 55-yard touchdown run.

No matter what team you root for, seeing Chubb back in action was heartwarming. Here’s hoping he stays healthy for the entire 2016 season.

Brian Herrien, RB, Georgia

Compared to Chubb, it didn’t look like Georgia freshman RB Brian Herrien did much, but he toted the ball seven times for 59 yards and a touchdown in a game the Bulldogs only won by nine points. He wasn’t the freshman running back most fans outside of Athens had been talking about.

Isaiah McKenzie, WR, Georgia

Sticking with the Georgia offense, junior WR Isaiah McKenzie also had a big day, catching six passes for 122 yards and a touchdown. He and freshman QB Jacob Eason showed they had some chemistry on Saturday afternoon. McKenzie essentially equalled his 2015 season output on the opening night.

Chris Black and J’Mon Moore, WRs, Mizzou

Since Mizzou only put up 11 points in a loss to West Virginia on Saturday afternoon, you wouldn’t think there’d be any offensive standouts.

However, WRs Chris Black and J’Mon Moore accomplished something a pair of Mizzou receivers hadn’t done since 2008 by each eclipsing the 100-yard receiving mark.

Black had six catches for 102 yards and the Tigers’ only touchdown, while Moore caught eight balls for 104 yards.

Drew Barker, QB, Kentucky

Kentucky QB Drew Barker came out firing in the Wildcats’ opener against Southern Miss. Barker threw for three touchdowns in the first quarter and ended the game 15-of-24 for 323 yards and four scores. Both totals were career-highs.

Yes, Barker and the Wildcats ended up blowing a 25-point lead and losing 44-35, but at least Kentucky can feel good about the play it got from the sophomore signal-caller.

J.D. Harmon, DB, Kentucky

Chris Westry may get most of the attention in the Kentucky secondary, but J.D. Harmon made a name for himself on Saturday evening, snagging two interceptions, one of which was this one-handed highlight:

He also averaged 27 yards on a pair of kickoff returns to add to his value.

Justin Evans, DB, Texas A&M

Many people expected UCLA sophomore QB Josh Rosen to go to College Station and have his way with the Texas A&M defense.

Senior DB Justin Evans had other plans, though, intercepting two of Rosen’s passes in big situations. In a game the Aggies won in overtime, Evans’ two picks are big reasons the game was allowed to get that far.

Oh, and he also popped his knee back into place during the game like it was no big deal:

Jalen Hurts, QB, Alabama

When it was announced that redshirt freshman QB Blake Barnett would start the game against USC on Saturday night, it stood to reason that true freshman QB Jalen Hurts wouldn’t have much of an impact. However, when Barnett was ineffective in the first quarter, Hurts got the call and never looked back.

Though he fumbled his first snap and also threw an interception in the game, he finished 6-for-11 passing for 111 yards and two touchdowns. He also added 32 yards and two more scores on the ground. That’s four combined touchdowns in his college debut.

Damien Harris, RB, Alabama

Speaking of Alabama youngsters, sophomore RB Damien Harris had a huge game in the blowout win over USC, too.

Harris carried the ball nine times for 138 yards, good for a 15.3 yards-per-carry average. He also broke free for a 73-yard scamper for his biggest gain of the night.
