Tennessee State coach Rod Reed had some big news to share Sunday. Christion Abercrombie, the TSU player, hospitalized after suffering a serious head injury on Sept. 29 in the Vanderbilt game, has been upgraded from critical condition to stable condition.

“I called his mom (Staci) late Saturday night and she called me back today and said he had been upgraded from critical to stable,” Reed told reporters, per The Tennesseean. “It’s really great news.”

Abercrombie has been at Vanderbilt Medical Center since undergoing emergency surgery.

Reed had more to share on Abercrombie’s progress.

“His mom said he’s giving thumbs-up,” Reed said. “He’s counting to four on his fingers, he’s opened one of his eyes and followed her around the room a little bit. He’s responding to stuff that they’re talking to him about; he understands what they’re talking about.”

Football fans around the country are hoping to hear more good news on Abercrombie. Sunday’s update is certainly encouraging.
