College football has the best traditions of any American sports. Twenty-five years ago this weekend, one of the sport’s best traditions began — ESPN’s “College GameDay” broadcasting from the host site of college football’s game of the week.

The first traveling episode of ESPN’s now famous pregame show was at Notre Dame to preview the Fighting Irish taking on the Florida State Seminoles. Ironically, Notre Dame and Florida State will meet again this Saturday.

It would have been very cool for ESPN to send its pregame show to South Bend for the anniversary, but with the Seminoles experiencing a “down season” by their standards, “College GameDay” will be elsewhere. Instead, it will be in Chestnut Hill for the de facto ACC Atlantic division championship matchup between Boston College and Clemson.

Even still, now is a great time to take a look back at that first road show for College GameDay in South Bend.
