Willie Fritz has reportedly landed his first Power 5 head coaching job.

The Houston Chronicle’s Joseph Duarte reported Saturday that Houston is hiring the Tulane head coach to replace Dana Holgorsen, who the Cougars fired after a 4-8 season.

Fritz has led Tulane since 2016 after joining the Green Wave from Georgia Southern. In the last 2 seasons, Fritz has led the Green Wave to a monumental turnaround. After going 2-10 in 2021, Tulane went 12-2 last season, including a win over USC in the Cotton Bowl.

This season, Tulane finished 11-1 and is competing in the AAC Championship on Saturday night.

Houston struggled in its first season in the Big 12. The Cougars managed just a pair of conference wins over West Virginia and Baylor, and missed out on bowl eligibility.

Holgorsen led Houston from 2019 to this season, taking over as the Cougars’ head coach following his resignation at West Virginia. He had mixed results in his time at Houston, leading the Cougars to a 12-2 record in 2021, but struggling in the transition to the Big 12.
