Kamilla Cardoso has a new team. The South Carolina star center was selected No. 3 overall by the Chicago Sky.

Cardoso is having quite the month of April. She recently helped South Carolina to a national championship win over an Iowa team led by No. 1 overall pick Caitlin Clark. Now, she’s officially a professional basketball player.

Cardoso earned Most Outstanding Player honors for the Women’s NCAA Tournament after posting a double-double of 15 points and 17 rebounds in the 87-75 Gamecock victory.

Cardoso goes pro after a decorated college career, which began at Syracuse as the 2021 ACC Freshman of the Year.

A 2-time national champion at South Carolina, Cardoso actually went from being a 23-game starter at Syracuse to a bench contributor in her first two seasons with the Gamecocks. Cardoso played in all 68 games over the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons, but did not start for South Carolina until this past season.

Cardoso was the SEC’s Sixth Woman of the Year in 2023. She followed that up by winning the SEC and national Defensive Player of the Year honors. Cardoso was named first-team All-SEC 2024 and a first-team All-American by multiple publications.

In her first season as a starter for Dawn Staley’s squad, Cardoso posted record production. She notched career-highs in minutes per game (25.3), rebounds per game (9.7) and points per game (14.4) leading South Carolina to an undefeated season.

Originally from Montes Claros, Brazil, Cardoso has also played for the Brazilian national team. Cardoso was the MVP of the 2022 South American Championship and 2023 FIBA AmeriCup, helping the team win gold medals.
