It appears as if Florida State is close to naming its next head coach.

Per ESPN’s Mark Schlabach and Adam Rittenberg, the Seminoles have pegged Memphis head coach Mike Norvell as the leading candidate to become the Seminoles next head coach.

What’s the delay on naming Norvell the head coach? The Memphis Tigers play Cincinnati Bearcats Saturday for the AAC Championship, but the deal could become official on Sunday, per the report.

Since arriving at Memphis in 2016, Norvell has taken the program to incredible new heights. He’s compiled a 37-15 overall record, including winning 11 games in 2019. In 2017, he also won 10 games. So, he’s a proven head coach who’s been waiting for a shot at a big program like FSU.

Before coming to Memphis, Norvell was an assistant at Arizona State, Pittsburgh, Tulsa and Central Arkansas. He played at Central Arkansas as a wide receiver from 2001-05.

Norvell is one of the hottest (and youngest) names on the coaching carousel. Memphis made him the highest-paid Group of Five head coach in 2017.

Florida State fired Willie Taggart earlier this year after finishing 9-12 in his first 21 games in Tallahassee.
