USC continues to look for its next head coach, and the Trojans may now be searching the NFL ranks.

On Monday, NFL Media’s Jim Trotter reported that USC boosters reached out to Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn to “gauge his interest in the university’s vacancy.” And according to Trotter, Lynn would be interested in the job, but there has not yet been contact between him and the school.

Lynn is a former NFL head coach, as he led the Los Angeles Chargers from 2017-20. During that time, they went 33-31 and made the playoffs once, which came after they went 12-4 in 2018. He’s now in his first year under Dan Campbell on the Lions’ staff.

Lynn, who played at Texas Tech from 1988-1991, has never coached at the college level. After a 6-year career in the NFL, he immediately began coaching in the pros.

Over the past 2 decades, Lynn has served as an assistant for the Denver Broncos (2000-02), Jacksonville Jaguars (2003-04), Dallas Cowboys (2005-06), Cleveland Browns (2007-08), New York Jets (2009-14) and Buffalo Bills (2015-16).

So it would be an interesting hire for USC, which is seeking a head coach after it fired Clay Helton following its first 2 games of the 2021 season. Rumors have circulated regarding the Trojans’ opening, but nothing has materialized yet.
