Clark Lea and Vanderbilt are getting ready for a cross division matchup against the Auburn Tigers this Saturday.

Wednesday on the SEC coaches media teleconference, Lea gave some insight into the Vanderbilt quarterback situation, and shared thoughts on Ken Seals and Walter Taylor.

“We do expect for both to play. The plan was to really to have Ken play the game but insert Walt in certain situations. We’re trying to get him some snap experience, and also feel like he has skillsets that we want to feature that can help us generate offense,” Lea said. “The way the first half played out, it became about interjecting a spark there in the second quarter, and I thought Walt was able to do that. So as we went to halftime and came back out, we wanted to continue to pull on that thread and see what we could get done. We need to possess the ball on offense so setting up some efficiency on 1st and 2nd down, getting 3rd down conversions. And really just trying to stress their structure. That was kind of our thought process in keeping him in there.”

Lea reflected on how each QB played last week in the loss at Ole Miss. Taylor was 4-for-12 passing for 38 yards and an interception. Taylor also rushed 20 times for 59 yards and a touchdown. Seals was 4-for-8 passing for 22 yards, and lost 3 yards rushing.

Taylor led a 3rd-quarter scoring drive that went 65 yards on 10 plays over 5:30.

“I thought there was some flashes of some really good things, and also a lot where we need to clean it up, but that’s going to be true anytime you’re playing a freshman at that position in this league. I think it’s important for us to build on the positives with Walt and recognize the fact that he does have the skillset that makes him a tough player to defend against. Ken’s performance was solid. I think there’s a couple more completions for him in the time he was in there in the 1st quarter and early in the 2nd,” Lea said. “But he was under pressure, there was just other factors that to me that limited his ability to move the offense the way we needed and Walt provided a little spark We want to control that this weekend and hope that the game play allows us to, meaning that we’re able to strategically insert the quarterbacks to both situations, but also in ways that keep a flow to our game. I think that’s the one thing you worry about with playing 2 guys is just getting out of sync or out of rhythm effecting or impacting the chemistry on the field. In this case, we have 2 capable people with really distinct skillsets and how do we best position them to be effective in moving the offense and scoring points.”

Vanderbilt looks to end its 7-game losing streak on Saturday when they take on Auburn at 4 p.m. ET on the SEC Network.
