Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason can’t catch a break.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, Vanderbilt CB coach Brett Maxie is headed for the NFL to join Dirk Koetter’s new Buccaneers staff as the defensive backs coach.

After gaining some momentum on the defensive side of the ball when he took over the defensive coordinator role in 2015, he’s going to spend much of his offseason getting his defensive coaching staff up to speed for the 2016 season.

Mason had already lost DL coach Frank Maile to Utah State and OLB coach Kenwick Thompson to East Carolina this offseason, with both coaches receiving the opportunity to hold coordinator titles with their new schools.

In a year in which Mason needs to show significant signs of improvement on the offensive side of things, he likely was counting on some continuity from a mostly successful defensive effort in 2015. That’s going to be harder to do with so many new coaches in place.

Maxie was the on Mason’s staff for two seasons. He joined the Commodores after a stint with the Tennessee Titans.

His 16 years in coaching prior to Vanderbilt were spent in the NFL, so it does make some sense that Maxie would return to an area in which he is most comfortable.
