Vanderbilt is headed to another bowl game in Derek Mason’s fifth season in Nashville, his second as Commodores coach in three seasons.

The success is reportedly drawing attention from Colorado, both because of his extensive Pac-12 experience, and his defensive acumen, according to SBNation. This report pointed out that Mason, a Phoenix native, spent four years as an assistant at Stanford.

Colorado recently fired Mike MacIntyre after a 5-6 record that followed a 5-0 start.

Vanderbilt won three of its last four down the stretch to finish the regular season 6-6, including back-to-back victories over Ole Miss and Tennessee to become bowl eligible. That was also the third straight win over the Vols.

Vandy did not play in a bowl game last season. The Commodores’ last bowl appearance came at the end of the 2016 season, when they lost to N.C. State in the Independence Bowl. It was Mason’s only bowl appearance in his first four seasons as Vanderbilt coach.
