Mt. San Antonio College doesn’t get much publicity on this site or on many news outlets throughout the college football season.

But unfortunately for the program, this week is different. Mt. San Antonio College – a community college in Los Angeles – played against Ventura College Saturday night.

During the third quarter, Bernard Schirmer, one of the team’s offensive linemen, committed an unthinkable act:

According to espn.com, Schirmer was immediately ejected from the game and then after review, was arrested on suspicion of battery. Schirmer was then taken Ventura County jail.

The official was trying to break up an argument between players before things went haywire. Trainers for both teams raced to the field following the punch, attending to the official. The official, whose name hasn’t been released, left the game and did not return.

“I shook his hand when he was coming off, and I asked him if he was OK,” Ventura College head coach Steve Mooshagian said via espn.com. “He looked like he was a little drowsy.”

The Ventura County Star reported that striking an official is punishable by a five-year ban, citing California Community College Athletic Association bylaws.
