After the success of Tennessee and Virginia Tech’s “Battle at Bristol” showdown, it’s not surprising to see other raceways looking at getting in on the action.

Richmond International Raceway president Dennis Bickmeier said his venue is looking into hosting a college football game.

“I think that could be the next progression,” Bickmeier told the Richmond Times-Dispatch (Va.). “I think it ties in nicely. … This facility turns 70 years old this year. Our job is to get it ready for the next 70 years.”

A few factors, however, could prevent another regular season matchup of Power 5 heavyweights. The venue hosts a race in September, making it first available for football in October when most teams are in the middle of the conference schedule. It’s difficult to convince many teams to give up a home conference game.

There’s also the fact that Richmond International’s capacity (66,000) is less than half that of Bristol Motor Speedway (156,000).

When those factors are considered, Bickmeier told the paper that a bowl game could be a better option than a regular-season showdown.
