Coming into the 2016 season, it appeared Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason was a dead man walking.

The Commodores coach was on the hot seat, and a 2-4 start to the season didn’t help Mason’s cause.

However, Vandy turned it around, pulling off a road upset of Georgia and ending the season with back-to-back home victories against Ole Miss and Tennessee to finish 6-6 and qualify for a bowl game.

According to ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg, the school is now having discussions with Mason about an extension and a raise:

Vanderbilt and coach Derek Mason have started discussions about a revised contract that would include a raise and more years, ESPN has learned. The Commodores won four of their final six games, closing with wins over Ole Miss and Tennessee, to finish 6-6 and ensure their first bowl game under Mason, who has improved his record in each of the past two seasons.

Vanderbilt improved from 4-8 last season and 3-9 in Mason’s first year as head coach in 2014.
