Florida State and Jimbo Fisher agreed to a contract extension on Monday that runs through the 2024-25 football season. Fisher received a raise of $250k, annually, bumping his yearly salary to $5.5 million, which makes him one of the five highest-paid head coaches in college football.

While Fisher has undoubtedly earned that contract for his success with the Seminoles, the real number that jumps off the page is what Florida State would owe the coach if they fired him without cause.

Fisher’s buyout will be nearly $45 million and then slowly start to decline. That means if Fisher suddenly forgets how to coach and the Seminoles inexplicably go 0-12 over the next two or three seasons, Florida State will owe him a considerable amount of money just to part ways with him for his team’s poor performance.

The Seminoles’ coach previously had the most expensive buyout before this extension, at a modest $33 million, but his new deal is truly mind-blowing. To put it in context, the combined buyout of all the SEC East’s coaches is $58.7 million. The combined buyout of the coaches in the SEC West, including Nick Saban, is $61 million.

Fisher alone is worth more than half of those totals. One thing is for certain, if Florida State ever decides to part ways with its head coach, it will cost them.
