When Lane Kiffin and Alabama parted ways before the national championship game, the new Florida Atlantic head coach gained extra time on the recruiting trail.

Out to prove he’s worthy of another chance at a top-tier head coaching job, Kiffin must turn the Owls into a winner. That all starts with recruiting. So, how exactly is the former Alabama offensive coordinator doing in that department? We did a little research to find out.

FAU currently has only 13 prospects in its 2017 class, which is ranked 94th in the country. The size of that class does have something to do with its low ranking, but it is still ahead of last year’s class, which finished ranked 100th.

Since Kiffin accepted the FAU job on Dec. 12, the Owls have landed eight commitments. The most notable commitment came from De’Andre Johnson, the No. 3 JUCO quarterback prospect. Kiffin says he didn’t have anything to do with landing the former Florida State quarterback, but Johnson should fit well in his system.

There has been a nice blend of offensive and defensive prospects in this class and several JUCO players. There are no 4- or 5-star prospects in this class, but its average prospect rating of .8040 is the highest in over a decade.

It’s going to take some time for Kiffin to establish his program, and it’s exceptionally hard for a new coach to land a good class with such little time to work with, but the former Alabama coach has fared pretty well so far. If Kiffin can land a 4-star prospect on National Signing Day, that would be a big win.
