PHILADELPHIA — The 2013 NFL Draft was a good one for the SEC. In addition to tying the ACC’s 2006 record by having 12 players selected in the first round, the SEC also set a record by having 63 total players chosen in the seven-round event.

However, the SEC might not be happy sharing the first-round record with the ACC. This year, the conference has at least 15 players who have a legitimate chance of hearing their names called Thursday night.

Anything can happen in the draft — all it takes is one team to fall in love with any particular player. With 19 SEC players in the top 64 of this CBSSports.com big board, the shared record could be in legitimate danger of being broken this year.

On Wednesday, Saturday Down South caught up with several of the top draft prospects from the SEC and asked them what it would mean to be a part of a record-setting draft class:

Jonathan Allen, DL, Alabama:

“What’s the record?” Allen asked.

When informed that the mark to beat was 12, he said he’s very confident the 2017 draft will be a record-setter for the SEC.

“Oh yeah, I think we’re breaking that,” he said. “It would mean a lot. I’m biased, but I think the SEC is the best conference in the nation, in the world. I definitely feel we could break that (record) this year. To be a part of that would be something special.”

Derek Barnett, DE, Tennessee:

“It would mean a lot. Playing in the SEC means you’re playing against great competition every day. You get a win on Saturday, Sunday you enjoy it. But Monday, you’ve got to get ready for the next week because whoever’s coming in can beat you. I loved playing in the SEC because you can’t take no days off, really.”

Cam Robinson, OL, Alabama:

“It’ll be a special moment. I believe, if it was based on on-field performance and based on tape, we (at Alabama) could have seven guys go in the first round. Just speaking on the whole SEC record thing, it would be a cool accomplishment.”

Tre’Davious White, CB, LSU:

“It’s a big deal. It just shows we’re the best conference in the NCAA. It’s been that way for a while. I think we have the most players in the league, also. It’s going to be a great accomplishment, man, but it’s a blessing also.”

One likely SEC first-round pick had a different opinion though, saying he’s all about the Tigers when it comes to draft selections.

Leonard Fournette, RB, LSU:

“I ain’t going to say ‘my conference.’ It’s LSU, period, man. It’s a blessing to join however many guys we have up there (in the NFL) — 57, 58, whatever it is. I’ll be honored to join it with those guys, especially those guys that were there while I was in school.”

Tune in to ESPN at 8 p.m. Eastern time on Thursday night to see if the SEC ends up breaking the record.
