One of the oddest stories of the summer involved three Vanderbilt players getting into a standoff while armed with nothing more than a pellet pistol. On Wednesday, Derek Mason decided to take action with the players involved.

Mason has indefinitely suspended wide receiver Donaven Tennyson and cornerbacks O’montae Daley and Frank Coppet, according to a tweet by WSMV’s Hayley Mason.

The incident began when Tennyson attempted to sell his cell phone online, but the buyer stole the phone and then took off with it when the two parties met up. Tennyson then found that the thief was attempting to sell the stolen phone, and he made a fake profile to arrange a meet-up. He bought a pellet pistol and enlisted the help of Daley and Coppet to try and frighten the thief into giving him his phone back.

Things didn’t go according to plan, however. When the Vandy players pulled out the fake pistol, the other men brandished an actual pistol and shotgun. Their meeting ended with Daley and Coppet suffering gunshot injuries, although neither were deemed serious.
