Which SEC team is the most overrated? It’s a common debate among the league’s fans with Tennessee, Georgia and LSU seemingly possessing the majority of votes these days.

Instead of leaving the topic up for debate, Greg Guglielmo of FiveThirtyEight went back and researched the last two decades in college football and determined Florida was actually the SEC’s most overrated program since 1997. According to Guglielmo’s research, Florida tied Notre Dame, Texas, Florida State and Penn State as the most overrated programs in college football over the last 20 years.

One note to add to this study, the programs that started higher ranked had a significantly higher chance of being overrated considering the vast majority of programs land outside that lofty perch by seasons end.

To conduct his research, Guglielmo found the average AP preseason rank of each school and matched up that ranking with the school’s season-ending rank. According to the study, Florida ranked worse than its by the end of the season 70 percent of the time between 1997-2016.
