Vanderbilt QB Kyle Shurmur took a huge step forward as a junior in 2017, finishing third in the SEC in passing yards (2,823) and second in touchdowns (26).

However, he’s not settling for his breakout year. Instead, he’ll try to make sure his senior year is even better.

To do that, he’s learning from one of the best quarterbacks in Vanderbilt history. According to The Tennessean, Jay Cutler has been helping Shurmur this spring, filming his footwork and talking with the rising star:

“Film is very valuable. All the details matter in this game,” Shurmur said. “(We are) just looking at certain things in my base and form that I can tighten up, making sure my fundamentals are nice and tight so that I can be a more consistent passer.”

Shurmur said he is only trying to learn from Cutler to help him this fall, not when it comes to the 2019 NFL Draft:

“I don’t even want to think about (next year’s NFL draft) right now,” Shurmur said. “I’ve got to take care of business here and help Vanderbilt win games if I even want to get to (the NFL).”

Still, with a big year, Shurmur could be an intriguing NFL prospect. His father, Pat Shurmur, just became the head coach of the New York Giants, so perhaps he could end up in the Big Apple.
