For those that have yet to fully embrace the fact that we are now living in the era of transfers in college football, look away from the following the list, it’s only going to hurt your eyes.

If you missed the news Monday morning, former five-star high school quarterback prospect Hunter Johnson is planning to leave Clemson via transfer. That news was first reported by Tigers Illustrated, the Clemson Rivals affiliate. The move makes some sense considering the Tigers signed another five-star QB prospect in the 2018 recruiting cycle ( Trevor Lawrence) but it’s interesting that Johnson decided to leave the program before getting much of a shot to prove himself on the field after signing in the team’s 2017 signing class.

Instead of facing competition, it’s becoming more and more popular for players to seek easier paths to potential playing time. That reality is most evident in college football at the quarterback position. That’s led to a dramatic uptick in departures, most of which are transfers after losing a competition or simply the threat of losing a competition. Obviously only one quarterback can take the field for meaningful snaps per program and opportunity to play can be limited but you have to wonder how well these players are being developed as they jump around from system to system and program to program.

Johnson’s reported decision is even more striking when you take into account he is set to become the 16th quarterback ranked as a top 10 prospect (either as a pro-style passer or a dual-threat prospect) that will leave the college football program he signed with out of high school during the last three recruiting cycles. In a different era, the vast majority of these players would likely have stuck it out and competed to earn a starting role as upperclassmen — although it should be noted that some of the players listed below were dismissed and did not transfer by choice.

Also note, not included on this list are players that have left their programs for the NFL, such as Josh Rosen or Sam Darnold.

Here is the list of all 16 quarterbacks, where they originally signed with out of high school and the path they took after leaving their programs. (Sheriron Jones wins the award for the road most traveled)
