Great college quarterbacks are so hard to come by, it doesn’t take much to get programs interested in a prospect that possesses the potential to blossom into the role. The latest sign of that comes from former four-star Mississippi State signee Cord Sandberg, who recently announced he was walking away from his minor league baseball career with the Phillies organization and returning to football.

The former third-round MLB selection in the 2013 draft never reached Triple-A baseball but did show plenty of promise on the gridiron during his prep career for Manatee High School in Bradenton, Fla. So much so that Dan Mullen recruited Sandberg to Starkville after the former Manatee star threw for 7,518 yards, 79 touchdowns to only eight interceptions and added an additional 1,795 yards on the ground and 26 scores in his high school career. He even led Manatee to a Florida state championship in 2011.

Now that Sandberg is back on the college football market, at least three SEC programs have reportedly expressed interest in landing him. According to Jason Guarente of The Reader Eagle, Sandberg has a scholarship offer from Auburn and walk-on spots available at LSU and Florida — which of course is where Mullen is now. Auburn offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey recently started following Sandberg on Twitter following his announcement that he planned to return to football.

It will be interesting to see if more programs follow suit and offer Sandberg an opportunity to quarterback in the SEC. For programs willing to take a shot on developing a quarterback, Sandberg very well could turn into the next Chris Weinke or Joel Klatt at the collegiate level if he lands in the right situation.

Here’s Sandberg’s senior season highlight reel from back in 2012. Think he’s worth taking a flyer on at this point?
