Former UCF coach Scott Frost was the hottest name on the coaching market this offseason, eventually returning to Nebraska to coach the team he played for.

How quickly that star has fallen. After an overtime loss to Northwestern on Saturday, the Cornhuskers are now 0-6 — the worst start in program history.

With games against Ohio State, Michigan State and Iowa still on the schedule, a bowl berth is looking increasingly unlikely, and this season could spiral out of control quickly.

To make matters worse for the Huskers, USA TODAY reports that it would cost the school about $26 million to buy out Frost’s contract:

At present, moving on from Frost would mean the school would be obligated to pay Frost as much as $26 million. Frost’s contract originally was for seven years, through Dec. 31, 2024. Nebraska would owe him $5 million for each year remaining through Dec. 31, 2022, with any partial year paid pro-rata. Then it would owe him $2.5 million for each of the final two years.

There’s still time for Frost to turn things around in Lincoln, and this was always going to be a rebuilding year, but no one expected the program to crater like this.
