The SEC and many other prominent conferences are getting ready for conference tournament week ahead of Selection Sunday. Some of college basketball’s smaller conferences, however, have already held their tournaments and thus for many mid-major programs, the 2019-20 season is in the books.

You could call it Mid-Major Black Monday, as Collin Sherwin of Draft Kings Nation did, for three coaches. Wyoming, Air Force and James Madison all fired their head coaches on Monday.

Allen Edwards is out at Wyoming after the Cowboys went 9-24 on the season and just 2-16 in Mountain West play. Edwards’ squad actually rallied to the semifinals of the MWC tournament, but it wasn’t enough to save his job. Neither was the fact that Wyoming was 20-13 against the spread this season, per Sherwin. Losing better than expected, however, doesn’t seem to cut it with athletic directors.

Edwards wasn’t the only Mountain West coach sacked. Dave Pilipovich is out at Air Force, just one season after being extended to 2023. The Flacons were 12-20 in 2019-20.

Louis Rowe is also out as head coach at James Madison. The Dukes were 9-21 overall and 2-17 against Colonial Athletic Association opponents.

This is sure to just be the first wave of college hoops coaches fired. We’re likely to hear more firings after the major conference tournaments.
