It took some time but Bryce Drew has landed on his feet.

The former Vanderbilt basketball coach has just been named the new head coach at Grand Canyon University.

Drew was dismissed at Vanderbilt by former AD Malcolm Turner after leading the Commodores to a 40-59 record in two and a half seasons on the court. Before landing the Vanderbilt job, Drew led Valparaiso to a 124-49 record in five seasons, which included two trips to the NCAA Tournament. Valparaiso reached the second round of each of those tournaments but never advanced to the Sweet 16.

During his time at Vanderbilt, Drew signed touted recruits Darius Garland, Simisola Shittu and Aaron Nesmith, but due to several factors, including injuries, those players never reached their full potential in Nashville.

“We are unbelievably excited to have Bryce Drew lead our basketball program into its next phase of development,” GCU President Brian Mueller said in a released statement. “Bryce built a very successful mid-major program at Valparaiso and proved he can recruit at a high level at Vanderbilt but, most importantly, he embodies the Christian mission of the University in how he lives his life both on and off the court.”

Following the news, Drew released the following statement:

“It begins with the mission of the University and the vibrant Christian atmosphere and how it’s moved out beyond the campus into the surrounding neighborhoods and the city. My wife and I fell in love with the campus and the area. Even with the mission and how great the campus is, it has fantastic people.”
