Kirk Herbstreit’s recent comments that he’ll be “shocked if we have NFL football this fall, if we have college football” due to the coronavirus pandemic disappointed fans everywhere. As arguably ESPN’s most prominent college football analyst, Herbstreit has the attention of fans everywhere when he speaks. One of Herbie’s media peers, however, is taking issue with the comments that were made late Thursday and published by TMZ on Friday morning.

Jason Whitlock of FOX Sports 1’s “Speak For Yourself” opined that Herbstreit should have kept his thoughts to himself and let the experts do the talking.

“I think he’s one of the most important voices in football, and that’s why I have a problem with these comments,” Whitlock said, also acknowledging he’s “made mistakes” as a sports media personality.

Whitlock continued, “I just don’t think those of us with a platform and with a respected voice in sports, how can we jump out here as coronavirus experts when the experts aren’t really experts, because this is brand new? This is a new experience with everybody. The narrative keeps changing hour to hour, day to day, week to week – we can’t fully figure out: have we overreacted? Have we underreacted?”

Whitlock is regularly mocked by sports fans for his “hot takes,” but he might actually have college football fans on his side this time. Whitlock’s full comments can be heard in the video below:
