The first Football Bowl Subdivision school has made the decision to cancel the 2020 college football season due to COVID-19 concerns.

UConn won’t play football this year, it announced Wednesday morning. The Huskies are currently a FBS Independent in football after leaving the American Athletic Conference following the 2019 season.

“We engaged and listened to the concerns of our football student-athletes and feel this is the best decision for their health, safety, and well-being,” head coach Randy Edsall said. “Our team is united in this approach and we will use this time to further player development within the program and gear ourselves to the 2021 season.”

The Huskies finished 2-10 overall in 2019, including a brutal 0-8 AAC record. Edsall has been the head coach since 2017, and he’s amassed only a 6-30 record in 3 seasons. He previously coached the Huskies from 1999-2010, too, compiling an 80-100 overall as the head coach of UConn.

The Huskies schedule had eroded recently due to COVID-19 concerns. Canceled games against Indiana, Illinois, Ole Miss and Maine were going to be tough to replace, and matchups against North Carolina and UVA were also highly unlikely to even happen.

UConn was scheduled to start practice Wednesday.

The Huskies’ decision has absolutely no bearing on Power 5 Conferences and their decisions to play (or not) the 2020 season.
