Things in college football are happening very quickly and remain fluid.

On Wednesday, the Big Ten announced that it would return to football this fall and will start its season on October 23 and 24 after canceling in August. Later, the Pac-12 started taking the steps to push for a return to college football this fall, too.

Now, another conference is “aggressively exploring” an 8-game season. Stadium’s Brett McMurphy tweeted that the Mountain West is also trying to pursue a season now.

“Mountain West ‘aggressively exploring’ options to play 8-game fall season, culminating with a December 19th title game,” McMurphy tweeted. “This would allow league to be eligible for New Year’s 6 bowls. Not all schools might play with Hawaii, Fresno and Air Force biggest unknowns for full season.”

It’s painfully obvious — the Big Ten, Pac-12 and Mountain West, among others, should have waited before canceling the season. Testing is much-improved, and the virus is showing no real effects on college-aged adults. Still, the SEC, ACC and Big 12 fought through all the chaos, trusted their medical experts and remained strong in their intention to play.

Teams that are in the Mountain West — Air Force, Boise State, Fresno State, Colorado State, Hawai’i, Nevada, UNLV, New Mexico, San Diego State University, San Jose State University, Utah State and Wyoming — have to be thrilled.

So, which conference is next to return to football? The Mid-American Conference? Things will likely continue to change quickly.
